The Programme
This course provides learners with an introduction to the industry, based on assisting technical staff in the salon. The course is a great way to experience what the craft has in store for you, gain valuable experience and meet lots of people while gaining a nationally recognised qualification.
The Programme Content
You will study basic salon skills and functional skills strengthening your employability. Assessment is by commercially competent practice on a range of clients with written and oral tests and assignments.
Entry Requirements
At Foundation Entry Level 1 there are no formal entry requirements but a good understanding of Maths, English and Science will be of benefit, as will good personal presentation skills and commitment to learning. At interview you will also be expected to complete a pre-entry test.
At Level 1 you will possess a minimum of four GSCE's grade E-G, to include Maths, English and Science. Good personal presentation skills and a commitment to learning is desirable. At interview you will also be expected to complete a pre-entry test.
Costs
You will need to purchase the salon uniform and your personal equipment which will cost approximately £150. Any educational visits, manufacturers diploma courses or similar activities will also be paid by you*.

Progression
On completion of the course you may continue your studies towards achieving the VRQ Level 2 qualification and employment, subject to satisfactory interview. You should make every effort during your year on the course to find out all you can about the hairdressing profession, by asking questions, attending open days and seminars etc, and researching possible career routes to help you make the right career choices. Most students who complete the Level 1 course progress on to a higher level course within either hair or beauty to further their skills and qualifications.
