The Programme

This is a programme which is designed to give young people an introduction to working in the different health and social care settings. It covers the theory which is needed to understand how to meet the needs of various different service users. It is divided into two parts, the first part is the extended certificate and the second part leads to the diploma. You have to successfully complete the extended certificate to move on the the diploma.

The Programme Content

The topics covered include:
Communication - you learn how we communicate with each other to make sure service user needs are met
Individual rights - you will explore things like the Human Rights Act and the Care Value Base
Individual needs and how we decide on what care is best for each service user
Safe working environments which is about hazards in the workplace and how the are dealt with
Cultural diversity which is about how all people are different
Nutrition where you will learn about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet through the different stages of life

Alongside this course you will participate in tutorial session on a group and one-to-one basis.

Entry Requirements

You will need a minimum of four GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade E or above, including English Language. Alternatively a successfully completed Foundation Learning Diploma and a pass in Functional Skills Maths and English at Entry Level 3 or higher. You will need to have a satisfactory result from your Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and Fitness to Train assessment.

Costs

You will need a memory stick and suitable clothes for your volunteer placement. Costs of trips and visits will be kept to a minimum but a contribution may be required. You will have to pay for your CRB check with is approximately £55 but subject to change. You will also need a folder, poly pockets, pens and money for printing in college*.

On successful completion of this course you have several options open to you including:
Apply for a Level 2 Health and Social Care Apprenticeship
Apply for another Level 2 course within the College
Apply for Level 3 Health and Social Care
Apply for another Level 3 vocational course within the College

One year.

Academic Year

This course starts in the 2012 / 2013 academic year.

CRB Checks

Due to the nature of the course, a CRB check is required at induction of the course.
