The Programme Content

This course is made up of two qualifications. The first is the BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, which comprises of four units and is assessed through assignment and other written work. The second element is the NVQ Level 2, which comprises of seven units. These are assessed through a variety of methods, including written assignment work, workbooks and observation of practice by your Petroc assessor. There is a compulsory placement element which must also be passed.

Entry Requirements

Learners need to have the ability to work at GCSE grade C level. Government requirements for Teaching Assistants state that a Level 2 qualification in English/Literacy and Maths/Numeracy must be held, so learners must hold or be willing to work towards these. Learners for this course should be 18 or over.

Progression

Upon completion of this programme, candidates are able to take up paid employment within the sector. From here, individuals are able to undertake an NVQ Level 3 course, and/or to complete other vocational training and auditing in order to gain Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HTLA) status.

Length of Study

This course runs over one year. Lessons run over two days per week in college, with three days a week in a placement setting.

Academic Year

This course starts in the 2012 / 2013 academic year.

Due to the nature of the course, a CRB check is required at induction of the course.
