Architecture, Surveying and the Built Environment BTEC Subsidiary Diploma - Tiverton

Apply for this course

Course code: FTT036

The Programme

This is a six unit award equivalent to an A Level incorporating architecture, surveying, health and safety, computer aided design (CAD), construction and the built environment, technology and services, and management. Time will be spent investigating the dynamic role of construction and will provide an ideal vehicle either for further/higher education or a career in construction.

The Programme Content

Visits to local construction sites are included where possible. There is an emphasis upon exploring the construction and design processes through role play and design case studies. For instance one year student worked in design groups to present their designs to clients for the renovation of some old barns into an outdoor activity centre and managers accommodation. This activity provided students with a practical experience of the design process and thus an insight into the job of the land/building surveyor, an architect and architectural technician. Students will also study a number of A Level courses alongside the national subsidiary diploma.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, which must include Maths, English and science. Do not be put off if your grades are not what they should be, or that you have been out of education for a while, we will take each case on its own merits. You may have other valuable qualities such as experience, that we can take into account.

Progression

This is an ideal vehicle for progression to employment or higher education. Past students have gone on to Oxford to study civil engineering and many other universities to study architecture, building surveying, construction management and coastal engineering to name but a few. In addition, some have moved into employment and continued their studies part time. It is becoming an increasingly important route into architecture that can avoid the high university fees, as students gain local employment and qualify via the workplace.

Length of Study

One year.

Academic Year

This course starts in the 2012 / 2013 academic year.
