The Programme

A practical art and design course which explores the production of original photographic imagery through observing and documenting life around you. The course will develop your image making skills which can involve drawing and other art and design processes, digital and traditional photographic techniques as well as experimental photographic techniques.

The Programme Content

The course comprises two units of work each year, one coursework unit involving some short projects and the outcomes of skills workshops, and an externally set assignment. You will be given a basic foundation in photographic and editing skills that you will be able to build upon independently in order to develop individuality and innovation in the way you create solutions in your work. Experimentation is encouraged and there are periodic opportunities to work together in order to help each other progress. There is a small studio with lights in the College; however much of the shooting of photographs will be completed outside of lesson time. There are opportunities to go on occasional trips in order to see photographic exhibitions, take photos, and participate in work experience.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language and a creative subject such as some form of Art and Design.

Costs

You will need to buy some basic equipment such as a memory stick and sketchbooks which will cost approximately £40. There will be a studio fee to cover the cost of basic materials of £30 per year. You are also likely to need to contribute to printing costs*.

Progression

Students wanting a career in Photography will either choose to progress to the Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design or go directly on to a specialist degree course in Art and Design, either at Petroc or elsewhere. In recent years there have been a growing number of students from this course making successful applications in photography and related subjects. There are also occasional opportunities to engage in work experience or live work that allow you to gain more vital understanding of the creative industries.

AS Level one year, A Level two years.

Petroc has really nice, modern facilities including the new gym and the PCs in the learning centre are up-to-date. It is a good friendly environment and a lot of support is offered to those that need it.
