The Programme

This is a skills based course which helps you to develop logical reasoning by examining lively controversial, topical arguments. It helps you to develop skills to assess the credibility of evidence and tackles problem solving by using principles to resolve contemporary dilemmas. Multiple choice questions are used to test thinking skills similar to those required by university entrance tests. Finally it teaches you how to use these logical reasoning skills to develop your own strong arguments.

The Programme Content

Critical thinking tests skills similar to those required by university entrance tests in specific subjects such as law, bio medics, UK clinical admissions test and the Oxbridge thinking skills admissions test. Studying critical thinking can therefore enhance your skills in these areas and increase chances of success in these university entrance tests. Universities are also appreciative of critical thinking at AS Level as it demonstrates the ability of a student to use clear reasoning and thinking skills.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including a minimum of grade C at GCSE in English Language. However a grade B at GCSE in English Language is suggested as this course involves looking at the precise meaning of claims and arguments.

Costs

Students are expected purchase a course textbook which costs approximately £18. This textbook also contains a DVD which contains additional support*.

Critical thinking is useful for a wide range of degree courses including law, philosophy, politics, media and journalism, as well as the sciences, enabling clear thinking and focused report writing. A wide range of employers such as the police force, armed services, civil service, social work, banking, education, nursing profession and many businesses also value the skills learned.
