The Programme
This is a course suitable for those students who are passionate about reading and enjoy discussing and writing about literature. You will study a wide variety of texts from different periods and genres during the programme, building on the skills you acquired at GCSE level.
The Programme Content
For the end of year exam at AS Level you will study aspects of narrative. This will involve studying how stories are told in two novels and two poetry texts. For the coursework you will write about the genre of comedy, for this you will study a play by Shakespeare and a modern play. In the second year you will study the pastoral genre. This will involve the study of a Shakespeare comedy, a modern play and a selection of modern pastoral poetry. Your coursework will involve further and independent learning. You will write a comparative essay about two novels and a second piece that will introduce you to literary theory.
Entry Requirements
Five GCSEs at grade C or above including at least a grade C in English Language. A grade B in GCSE English is recommended.

You will be required to purchase your texts for this course. This will cost approximately £25*.

Progression
You may wish to use this course to help you gain a university place to study another subject or apply for a job. English is a subject which is highly regarded everywhere. If you are intending to study English Literature at university you will have a wide choice because many universities offer it. A Level English literature is also a useful subject to have if you want to study other humanities subjects. Students have gone on to follow careers in areas such as the media, publishing, marketing and teaching.
