The Programme

The overall aim of this course is to encourage candidates to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of ICT and to provide the knowledge and skills suitable for participation in an evolving information based society. The course provides a focus to develop these skills whilst ensuring that candidates acquire a sound knowledge of ICT.

The Programme Content

AS Level ICT consists of two units:

Info 1 - Practical Problem Solving in the Digital World.
This section is about developing the students' knowledge and understanding of ICT systems and practical software experience. Within this unit, students will examine the analysis, design, implementation, testing and evaluation of ICT related solutions. They will critically consider their choice of hardware, software and its appropriateness to the solution it solves.

Info 2 - Living in the digital world.
This section will develop students' understanding of the use of ICT in a wider context, and understand the broader issues associated with the growing use of ICT in our world.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English. No previous knowledge of ICT is assumed.

Progression

This specification provides a suitable foundation for the study of ICT or a related area through a range of higher education courses, vocational courses (eg Information Technology, Information Systems and Business Computing) or direct entry into employment. In addition, the specification provides a coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study for candidates who do not progress to further study in this subject.
