The Programme
The foundation diploma is the established route to art and design degree courses. It provides a link between the skills acquired at A Level and the demands of specialist courses at university. The primary aim of the course is to educate learners to make informed decisions which will enable progression to appropriate courses in all areas of art and design.
The Programme Content
The primary aim of the course is to educate learners to make informed decisions which will enable progression to appropriate courses in all areas of art and design.
There are three stages to the programme: The Exploratory Stage - covering skills in observing and responding to visual information, The Pathway Stage - where you will choose a specialist area to work in and develop more specialist skills by exploring ideas and outcomes and using a range of processes, The Confirmatory Stage - a personal project written by you which allows you to demonstrate the skills acquired throughout the course whilst showing the ability to research and discuss your response to specialist contextual issues.
Entry Requirements
Most students will have completed a two year A Level programme including an Art and Design A Level or will be able to demonstrate their commitment and ability with a portfolio of work. A small number may have only completed an AS Level programme before progressing to the foundation course.
Costs
You will need to buy some equipment and sketchbooks at the beginning of the course which will cost approximately £60. There will be a studio fee to cover the cost of basic materials of £90 per year*.

Progression
The vast majority of students progress to relevant specialist university courses, either outside of this area or at Petroc, a few choose not to apply and to pursue a career within the creative industries. For the past 15 years, 100% of students who applied to higher education have won places.

Further Information
The lecturers are very accommodating, it gives you a lot more opportunities, helps you with the financial side, if you struggle with something, the lecturers will help you one on one. It’s a friendly atmosphere. It’s enjoyable to come and do a course here.
