The Programme
This course is made up of two parts. The first part, the subsidiary diploma (equivalent to an A Level) lasts two terms. If you successfully complete this programme and wish to continue then you will be offered a place on the extended diploma (equivalent to three A Levels). This is a full time course designed to help you understand the some of the key topics needed for working in the health and social care sectors.
The Programme Content
Both parts of this course will help you to understand in depth the theories which underpin work in health or social care settings. Learners on this programme will need to have a genuine interest in finding out about people of all ages and with varying needs. They will explore issues surrounding people from birth until death. Learners will be expected to do a significant amount of research for themselves in and outside of normal college hours and will need to apply theories into care situations. Some of the areas covered include, effective communication, equality and diversity, health, safety and security of service users and their information, professional practice portfolio, anatomy and physiology, and development through the life stages.
Entry Requirements
You will need five GCSEs at grade C or above, ideally including English Language and Maths. A Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and Fitness to Train assessments are necessary before starting this programme as it is a challenging programme preparing you to work with vulnerable adults or children. You will need a satisfactory school or college report demonstrating good attendance and an attitude appropriate for working in health and social care.
Costs
A memory stick to store electronic copies of work/information. You will need appropriate text books and suitable clothing for placement. You will have to pay for your CRB check, approximately £55 which must be completed before you start the course. You will have to pay for any trips and visits and the costs of these are kept to a minimum.

Progression
Many learners go on to university where there are a wide range of courses leading to possible careers in health, social or child care. This course would not be a recommended route for physiotherapy, dentistry or medicine. Learners not wishing to go to university may choose to develop their practical skills by training in the workplace and could apply of a Health & Social Care apprenticeship.
Length of Study
Subsidiary Diploma is one academic year and the Extended Diploma is two academic years.

This course starts in the 2012 / 2013 academic year.
CRB Checks
Due to the nature of the course, a CRB check is required at induction of the course.
