Foundation Degree in Ceramics

The Programme

This course develops skills and ideas within ceramics. Study includes practical and theoretical work embracing individual and group activities. A body of work prepared at each stage forms the core of assessed material, this is supplemented by written documentation, peer co-operation and presentations made by the students.

The Programme Content

The course encourages students to respond to the unique environment and ceramic traditions of North Devon whilst developing their individual skills and interests. The course reflects the importance of practising ceramicists and other designers/makers working in the area, as reflected in the galleries and other outlets aimed at both the resident and visitor.
Modules range from the development of ideas and problem solving, the exploration of ceramic techniques, business studies and professional practice. Students will be encouraged to consider wider approaches in terms of materials used. This exposure to trying out their ideas in other materials may lead to the student wishing to move permanently from clay based work but using other processes to stay within the designer/maker framework.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have 80 UCAS points, preferably in an art related subject. Applications are welcome from students with non traditional or non academic backgrounds, however you may be asked to submit further evidence to support your application. The most important requirement is a portfolio of work which you will present at interview. This could be wide ranging in content and should demonstrate your potential as a ceramics student.

Costs

To enable the studios to function efficiently there is an annual materials fee of £120. Students can also buy certain materials at a subsidised rate.

Progression

Upon successful completion students will be able to progress to the third year of an appropriate degree at Plymouth University. There will be an opportunity upon graduation to apply for an incubation unit (starter space) at the School of Art, enabling you to have a supported workshop space in which to develop your practice within a professional environment.
