Foundation Degree in Environmental Health
UCAS code: B910
Awarding Body: University of Plymouth
Mode Of Study
Part time over three years.
The Programme
The programme is the only one of its kind in Devon and Cornwall. It provides a direct career development route for people in the local area who want to study to become environmental health practitioners or environmental health officers within local authorities. It is also possible to use the programme to develop other careers in the private or public sectors in areas such as public health, health and safety, food safety and pollution monitoring etc. The programme is accredited by The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and is supported by local public sector employers who will contribute to the programme as guest lecturers and as providers of work based learning opportunities.
The Programme Content
The programme encompasses all aspects of environmental health work and will produce graduates with a general knowledge of environmental health from which professional specialisms may be developed. There are several scientifically oriented modules which will require students to take part in laboratory and field work. Environmental Health Practitioners must have a familiarity with pollutants and how these may contaminate the environment, and how micro-organisms may contaminate the human body. There is one module dedicated to food safety which will include food hygiene, toxicology and pathology. Housing is another important feature, and this subject is studied in combination with physical infrastructures. It is important that a familiarity with housing design and construction is developed and that the health related impact of inadequate construction and construction materials is recognised. This aspect of the programme extends to neighbourhood nuisance, drainage, sewage and housing inspec

Normally applicants will be required to have achieved 120 UCAS points. Mature or in service applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Progression
The course is designed to provide a route by which students can establish careers as environmental health officers in local authorities. This would require one year of further study at one of our partner universities to obtain a Bachelor's Degree. However there are other available career routes and opportunities do exist in the private and public sectors in careers such as, public health, food safety, health and safety and pollution monitoring.
