Foundation Degree in Illustration

UCAS code: W220

Awarding Body: University of Plymouth

Mode Of Study

Full time over two years.
Part time over four years.

The Programme

This course develops skills and ideas within illustration. Study includes practical and theoretical work embracing individual and group activities. A body of work prepared at each stage forms the core of assessed material, this is supplemented by written documentation, peer co-operation and presentations made by the students.

The Programme Content

Within art and design, illustration is a visually dynamic means of communication and is wide and varied. Our course begins with an introduction that explores the breadth of illustration, what it is and how it works within our everyday lives. This course aims to build skills, broaden horizons and challenge thinking to enable students to respond, create, invent, explore and resolve ideas. Students are encouraged to make individual responses to a range of art and design briefs, via traditional approaches, new technologies, two and three dimensions or time based responses such as animation. Underpinning this we look at 20th and 21st century art and design examples and explore a breadth of professional guidelines designed to help you function as an Illustrator in the wider world.

Entry Requirements

Candidates should have 80 UCAS points, preferably in an art related subject. Applications are welcome from students with non traditional or non academic backgrounds, however you may be asked to submit further evidence to support your application. The most important requirement is a portfolio of work which you will present at interview. This could be wide ranging in content and should demonstrate your potential as an illustration student.

Costs

To enable the studios to function efficiently there is an annual materials fee of £120 full time and students can also buy certain materials at a subsidised rate.

Venue

Barnstaple Campus

Dates

The full time programme is timetabled for three full days per week in the studio. For 2011, studio days will be Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
For the part time course, Mondays will be the dedicated studio day.

Progression

Upon successful completion students will be able to progress to the third year of an appropriate degree at the University of Plymouth. There will be an opportunity upon graduation to apply for an incubation unit (starter space) within our arts facilities at Brannams, enabling you to have a supported workshop space in which to develop your practice within a professional environment. There will also be the possibility of post graduate courses written specifically for our own graduates within the broad field of creative practice. These are the creative industries certificate and diploma of professional development and will be run at the Brannams campus.
