The Programme

The course will develop your practical skills and knowledge as a musician. You will be taught to enhance and support these skills in a broader context such as organising, managing, recording, presenting your own music and marketing it using varied methods. At the end of the course you will be able to function as a one person music company or be ideally suited for a range of jobs within the profession.

The Programme Content

The course is delivered through lectures, practical performance sessions and activities, seminars, recording sessions, presentations and work based learning. Assessment consists of performances, hands on practical tests, CDs, work placements, aural tests, presentations and written work.

Entry Requirements

If you are completing post 16 education and will achieve a national diploma or A Level in Music or Music Technology, or any appropriate Advanced Level 3 course, then this could be your next move. Evidence of Functional Skills passes will provide strong support for your application. We happily accept applications from mature students and will often take a wider more flexible view of your skills or potential, even if you have missed out on formal qualifications.

Costs

You will need to have your own instrument, although larger instruments such as keyboards and drum kits will be available for practice sessions. You should always provide your own drumsticks or leads. You will need headphones and data storage tools such as USB pens and CDs, as well as standard academic materials. To enable the studios to function efficiently there is an annual materials fee of £120.

Progression

There are many career progressions in the trade. Musicians work in the theatre and recording industry, as well as pursuing careers as self-employed solo or ensemble careers. Contracted bands or ensembles are also an option. Many musicians also work in presenting or supporting the performing arts; or in media. You can also progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Music degree or the one year BA (Hons) Sound and Music Production top-up at Plymouth University. Please note there is a progression application deadline and places may be subject to availability.
