Foundation Degree in Psychology with Sociology

UCAS code: C8L3

Awarding Body: University of Plymouth

Mode Of Study

Full time over two years.
Part time over three years.

The Programme

Psychology is the study of people; how they think, act, react and interact. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and the thoughts, feelings and motivation underlying such behaviour. Sociology allows for influences beyond the individual to be taken into account. Sociology will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the rapidly changing nature of contemporary society. The programme will combine the two and aims to introduce students to a new way of thinking about society and the behaviour of people. It will also give a basis of training in skills which are needed as a graduate to be prepared to enter the work force.

The Programme Content

Some of the core modules covered are:
Research methods
Individual differences
Sociological imaginations
Applying sociology
Social change in a modern world
Social identities
Other modules will look at key areas of psychology including the ways in which we interact within the social world, cognitive psychology and the way we think and use our memory. Topics of abnormal psychology looking at mental health disorders will also be covered. As the course is aimed at both those who have recently finished education and those who may have been out of education settings for a while, we have a course aimed at developing the skills needed as a graduate including reflective writing and a work placement. Modules are assessed by a variety of methods which include coursework, examinations, presentations, seminars and research reports.

Entry Requirements

The course is suitable for those completing post 16 education who will achieve an A Level in Psychology or Sociology, AVCE Health and Social Care or any relevant Level 3 course. We are happy to accept applications from mature students with relevant experience. While many applicants will have passed academic examinations, we will often take a wider and more flexible view of your skills or potential.

Costs

Students will be required to provide their own stationery and to print handouts for lectures and presentations. All work is submitted in hard copies and so some printing costs will be incurred. Students will also be provided with a reading list and may wish to purchase books. More guidance on this will be given throughout the course. A USB pen would be useful.

Venue

Barnstaple Campus

Dates

The first year of the foundation degree will be offered over three days and the second year which will also be over three days, although which days may differ. The part time course teaching will be within the full time classes and students will be asked to attend one day per week for three years. Again some flexibility is needed as this may be a different day each year of study.

Progression

Students who successfully complete the course may be able to progress to Plymouth University to undertake a one year top up in the BSc (Hons) Psychological Studies. Please note there is a progression application deadline and places may be subject to availability. The areas of health and social care, teaching and education, customer service and human resource management are careers which are particularly relevant to this course. The FdSc Psychology with Sociology course does not carry accreditation for the British Psychological Society which is a requirement for certain careers within psychology (eg forensic, educational or clinical etc). If you wish to pursue such a career you will be required to apply to stage 2/second year of the BSc (Hons) Psychology degree at Plymouth University (or another institution) to gain accreditation or complete a conversion course upon graduation (please note these are not approved progression routes so places may not be available).

I enjoyed it at Petroc and I liked my teachers, especially the Science teachers - they were very good.
