The Programme
The programme utilises the health promoting principles of sport, coaching, fitness, physical activity, nutrition and psychology to suggest preventions and offer moderations for a number of disease conditions including cancer, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes. As well as these scientific elements, the course also includes aspects of sports and health policy, and health promotion strategy.
The Programme Content
The programme modules are constructed around the main scientific disciplines which underpin coaching, fitness development and health maintenance, as well as providing an insight into historical and organisational perspectives. The assessed work allows you to specialise in areas which are of particular interest to you. You will develop an array of academic, practical and interpersonal skills. You will be required to undertake a substantial work placement project in an aspect of the industry of your choice, and as a result of this and other industry related tasks, you will come into contact with and work with local employers.
Modules include Human Performance in Sports, Sports Coaching, Health and Fitness Principles, Developing Graduate Skills, Sport, Health and Physical Activity Organisations, Research Methods, Health Promotion, Lifestyle and Wellbeing, Health and Activity for Young People, Special Populations, Further Principles of Sports Coaching and either Psychology of Health or
Entry Requirements
The programme will be of interest to those with a sports background, those interested in health care and also health maintenance, as well as those looking to pursue a career within the coaching or fitness sector. Ideally you will need to be educated to A Level or BTEC National standard with 160 UCAS points, but applications from mature applicants without these qualifications are also considered. It would be to your advantage if you had science qualifications. You will need to be physically active and reasonably fit.
Costs
Students are expected to provide their own stationery materials and it is advisable to purchase key texts as these will be useful throughout the programme and beyond. There will also be an annual supplementary fee of £20. Depending on demand you may have the opportunity to undertake additional awards such as First Aid and there may be the possibility to undertake an industry based fitness instructor award. In these cases students will have to pay course and examination fees. Students will also need to obtain a CRB check.

Dates
The attendance requirement for the full time programme is two days per week (Wednesday and Thursday), which maximises your opportunities to remain in employment. You will attend lectures, seminars, workshops, off site visits and take part in practical activities. You will also undertake personal research projects.
Progression
Successful students may decide to apply to spend one further year at Plymouth University to study the BSc (Hons) Health and Fitness top-up or either the BSc (Hons) Health, Exercise and Physical Activity or BSc (Hons) Coaching and Fitness Education at University College Plymouth Marjon in order to obtain a Bachelor Degree. Please note there is a a progression application deadline and places may be subject to availability. Career avenues which you will be able to work towards are; Fitness Instructor, Coach, Health Consultant, Personal Trainer, Teacher/Lecturer, Researcher, Health Promotion Officer, Sports Development Officer and Youth Worker. Most of these will require you to progress from the Foundation Degree and undertake further study.
