The Programme
This course gives you the basic skills and the understanding with which to teach in the life long learning sector. Available for learners aged 19+ only.
Suitable for students aged 16 and over. Please ring to enquire about any exceptions.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However to gain maximum benefit from the course you should have subject or vocational qualifications to Level 3 plus evidence of experience and relevant professional qualifications. You should also possess effective communication skills and have a good command of written English. You would normally be expected to have an English Language qualification at Level 2 (GCSE English Grade C). There is also an initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT needs and a planning session to ensure that an individuals personal and professional developmental needs are identified so that appropriate CPD can be arranged. Students must have mentoring support in their own subject area and students are responsible for obtaining their own mentor. The mentor must be prepared to attend initial training.

Progression
The PTLLS Award can lead to employment in teaching or training in post-16 education. This programme meets the new national standards for Teachers in the Lifelong Learning Sector and will act as an initial 'Licence to Practice'. On successful completion of the course you will gain 6 credits towards the Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS).
Length of Study
The PTLLS Award is delivered over a ten week period, three hours per week. Since this award provides the licence to teach in the Sector applicants must be prepared for a reasonably intensive learning

What is AWARD IN PREPARING TO TEACH IN THE LIFELONG LEARNING SECTOR LEVEL 3?
The PTLLS qualification is regarded as the basic license to teach qualification in the Lifelong learning Sector. The Award is suitable for those who work or want to work as teachers/trainers/tutors/assessors in:- Further Education Colleges, Adult and Community Education, Voluntary Sector, Commerce, Industry,Public Sector or HM Forces. This Award is available at two levels: Level Three Award and a Level Four Award. Successful completion of the course would entitle you to join the Institute for Learning, the new professional body for teachers, trainers, tutors and student teachers in the sector. The Award is designed to contribute towards developing the skills, knowledge and understanding that can lead to employment in post-16 education. The PTLLS qualification is the 'first stage' qualification in the new suite of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) courses leading to Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills Status (QTLS), Licensed Practitioners Status and allows for Professional Formation.

Who is the course for?
The Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector is suitable for those who work or want to work as teachers/trainers/assessors and tutors in post 16 education. All teachers will be required to have at least this qualification in order to be hired as a teacher. The PTLLS qualification is therefore a mandatory minimum qualification for all those teaching in the Learning and Skills Sector.
What is the course content?
This course offers a chance to explore the challenges and rewards of teaching and to get a foot on the professional ladder. It teaches you to plan lessons, to support a range of learners needs, to develop a range of teaching and learning activities and methods, and to understand and deploy a range of valid and reliable assessment methods used to measure learning. By the end of the course, you will have planned and delivered a 30 minute 'micro teach' encapsulating all that has been learnt on the programme.
This is a one unit qualification, comprising of the following sections:
- Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching.
- Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area.
- Demonstrate session planning skills.
- Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners.
- Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.
How will it be assessed?
There are six theory and practise assignments and you will also need to ensure that you complete a learning journal portfolio and a micro teach session lasting 30 minutes.
