The Programme

Open Doors is designed for school leavers who need supported learning and who may - because of lack of confidence, poor social skills or physical disabilities - find it difficult to fit in and succeed on other courses. The qualification target is generally an NOCN Diploma (Step-Up) Progression Qualification at Entry Level 3 but can tailor for students of other levels. The course is highly supported with students being taught in small group settings.

The Programme Content

Students study units covering a wide variety of subjects. Most are practical and highly interactive. The exact units will be developed according to the needs and interests of the group but this year have included: Cooking and Independent Living, Team Enterprise, Team Skills, Community Action, Health and Fitness, Preparation for Employment, Craft and Planning and Participating in Walks, Alcohol and Drug Awareness. Open Doors students will also take Functional Skills qualifications in Maths, English and IT.
Cross section activities on Friday afternoons enable students to have a go at a range of fun sessions including outdoor adventure, baking, fitness, trampolining, craft, looking good, car valeting, woodwork, recycling, singing and drama and indoor sport.

Entry Requirements

Who is the course for?
The course is for students who have experienced any of the following: lack of self confidence, extreme shyness, low self esteem, speech difficulties, Autism/Aspergers, physical disability, discomfort with large groups, victims of bullying, poor social skills, inappropriate behaviour, ADHD, those who have missed periods at school because of illness, school non-attenders, school-phobics and non-independent travellers.

The purpose of the course is to prepare students to move on to other courses in the section, the wider College or employment.

Length of Study

Open Doors is a one year programme with the possibility of a second ‘employability' year.

This course starts in the 2012 / 2013 academic year.
