Apprenticeships

Are you aged 16 - 24?

Would you prefer to be working and earning money whilst training towards a skilled career?

This could be your chance to train for a skilled job and earn a wage. Employers provide on-the-job training throughout your learning programme and look to their employees to be motivated and disciplined. Apprenticeships are day release during term time unless stated otherwise.

Apprenticeships are designed to enable you to get a qualification and reach your full potential, but to ensure success you will need to be committed to your chosen career and employed in your chosen industry. An apprenticeship provides you with skills that will give you satisfaction both at work and in life. All Apprenticeships at Petroc can progress to a level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship. They can also lead to higher achievement and further studies, giving you more career opportunities.

We set up and support apprenticeship programmes. As you start an apprenticeship you will be allocated a Placement Officer who is the main college contact for both you and your employer. From the outset your Placement Officer will meet with your employer to discuss training requirements and ensure that health & safety and insurance in the workplace are checked. He/she will advise employers of steps to take to make sure they are fully informed of issues surrounding the apprenticeship scheme.

You can see your Placement Officer in college and regularly in the workplace when he/she carries out progress reviews.

Your Placement Officer is there to support you in your workplace and advise you if you have problems during your training programme.

"I have really enjoyed life at College over the last three years. I have learnt a lot and the teachers are great." James Edwards - Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation, works for M&E Masters.

"NDC is a nice place to work and being on reception means you meet lots of staff/students, never a dull day! Doing the apprenticeship has also increased my confidence and knowledge." Sarah Woollacott - Apprenticeship in Business & Administration.

"The College has been really good; they were the ones who sent off my CV to my current employer when I decided to become an apprentice and they helped sort out the wages. Apprenticeships give you a good idea of what the working world is like without being chucked in at the deep end - and the course gives me time to enjoy other things like rugby!" Mark Ley - Apprenticeship in Plumbing.

Working together for your future

At Petroc we offer the following in many occupational areas:

  • Apprenticeships (Level 2)
  • Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3)

Accounting - Barnstaple

Running a business involves a lot of financial activities, from expenses and bills to taxes and payroll - accountants keep track of all these things and more. This apprenticeship could find you working in an accounts department, helping a business or organisation manage their money properly. It takes a business brain, as well as a way with numbers, to get ahead.

Business Administration - Barnstaple & Tiverton

Without administrators, information would be hard to find, meetings would be missed and businesses would be less productive. This sort of work requires a strong sense of responsibility, accuracy and attention to detail. One of the great things about the business administration apprenticeship is that you can work almost anywhere. Administration roles are also an excellent starting point to move into management once you have more experience.

Care - Barnstaple

This apprenticeship is available to people aged 18 and over. It covers a wide range of job roles in the health and social care fields and you will be looking after a wide range of elderly, learning disability or mental health clients. It will stand you in good stead for progression onto higher education in subjects like nursing or midwifery and supervisory or management roles in the care sector.

Children's Care, Learning and Development 0-16 years - Barnstaple & Tiverton

Workers in this area make sure children are looked after, kept active, happy and nourished. They also help children develop social and practical skills. After successful completion of this Apprenticeship there's good scope for progression. You may move up through levels of work, for example, from nursery assistant to nursery manager. There are also opportunities to undertake further training or assessment.

Customer Service - Barnstaple & Tiverton

This Apprenticeship can be applied to hundreds of job roles across many different sectors. As a customer service apprentice, you'll be making sure that customers are dealt with in a positive, reliable and pleasant way - offering advice, answering questions or handling complaints. These are skills that will serve you well in virtually any industry - so it's a very good way to move forward, even if you're still undecided about your future career.

Electrical Installation - Barnstaple & Tiverton

Bright sparks should consider this apprenticeship, which gives a complete grounding in the scientific and practical aspects of electrical installation. You'll learn how to install and commission electrical systems - test them, inspect them, find and diagnose faults. Attendance at college includes studying science based subjects to an advanced level and practical workshop based activities. You will also need to undertake a practical competency assessment in the latter end of your apprenticeship.

Engineering - Barnstaple

Engineers design and build the things that make our world go round. Everything, from aeroplanes to buildings, comes back to engineering. Apprentices begin by learning about work safety, how to communicate technical information and identify engineering equipment. Through the Advanced Apprenticeship you can become either a skilled craftsperson (skilled in practical trades, like fitting or machining) or a technician (involved in technical matters and problem solving).

Hairdressing - Barnstaple & Tiverton

As a Hairdressing apprentice, you'll work as a salon junior, assisting senior staff while training as a junior stylist. Advanced apprentices develop their cutting and colouring skills so they can carry out all the latest fashion techniques - and determine the looks of the future. You'll need to look smart and have good communication skills to understand exactly what your customer wants in order to make them happy.

Hospitality and Catering - Barnstaple

Hospitality and catering covers work in restaurants, hotels, cafés, pubs, and contract caterers - it also supplies other industries with food and drink. There are dozens of possible career options. You need to have an outgoing personality and be prepared to work in an environment which is largely shift based. Successful completion of the Advanced Apprenticeship could lead to management or supervisory roles.

Using Information Technology - Barnstaple

IT makes the modern world go round. The technical expertise and knowledge you gain during this apprenticeship will make you a valuable asset to any organisation that relies on computers - which is pretty much everyone. There is also a chance to gain other qualifications during this apprenticeship such as the European Community Drivers Licence (ECDL) and you could progress to Petroc's Foundation Degree in Computing.

Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair - Honiton site

If bikes are your passion and you want to be a motorcycle mechanic, this apprenticeship is for you. At Level 2, there are two elements: the NVQ, which is assessed in the workplace and; a college-based Technical Certificate. The pattern is the same at the next level up, with one day a week at college. Not many colleges offer this apprenticeship and Petroc is proud to be one of them.

Motor Vehicle - Barnstaple & Tiverton

There are more than 32 million vehicles on the UK's roads, so we need plenty of motor vehicle technicians to keep them roadworthy. Apprenticeships in motor vehicle are currently offered for Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and Vehicle Body Repair or Refinishing. Usually, apprentices begin at Level 2 and the course runs on a block release basis for body/refinish and day release for light vehicle maintenance. Time in college is divided between theory sessions and practical experience. You may have the opportunity to progress to Level 3, depending on your progress and the work carried out in your placement.

Painting and Decorating - Barnstaple

Making buildings look their best with a perfect finish, the apprenticeship in decorative occupations is studied over two years. Students in the first year will take the Construction Diploma Level 1 and the CSCS Health and Safety test. Following this, students can progress to Levels 2 and 3 - including further Diplomas and NVQs - over subsequent years.

Plumbing - Barnstaple

As a plumbing apprentice, you'll learn about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. The plumbing industry is a highly competitive field and plumbers must be familiar with everything from domestic boilers to advanced welding techniques to computerised control systems. In recent years, the industry has also been involved with developing environmentally sound technologies like solar water heating and rain water harvesting.

Retail - Barnstaple & Tiverton

Retail covers a host of businesses from market stalls and independent shops to national chains and large superstores. As an apprentice you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or working behind the scenes in stock handling, ensuring products are received in the correct quantities and appropriately stored. From organising displays to learning the crucial aspects of management, the skills gained from this apprenticeship are transferable to all retail companies.

Trowel Occupations - Barnstaple & Tiverton

To qualify as a craft mason you will need to show an aptitude to craft masonry and the construction industry. An apprenticeship in Craft Masonry will allow you to work towards the Construction Diploma Level 2, the CSCS Health and Safety card and NVQ 2 in Trowel Occupations. There are college and work based practical assessments. Study mode is either day or block release - dependant on any prior experience in the field.

Wood Occupations - Barnstaple & Tiverton

Wood occupations include site joinery, bench joinery or wood machining. You will also study for the Construction Diploma Level 2, the CSCS test in Health and Safety and NVQ 2 in Wood Occupations. You may then progress on to an Advanced Apprenticeship which will include the Construction Diploma Level 3. The apprenticeship can be studied through either day or block release - day release is for people who have already been working on site for at least two years or are aged 19 or above.
