Green Group shortlisted for National Award
North Devon College's Student Green Group was pleased to hear that they were amongst 31 higher and further education institutions shortlisted for the prestigious Green Gown Awards. The group have been shortlisted in the student initiative category for Regional Influence from Local Action, a student-led youth group, facilitated by Pete Jolly of the Student Support team, which has run successful campaigns and awareness raising sessions on environmental, social and sustainable development issues for both College students, teachers and undergraduates at the University of Plymouth.

This was the culmination of many months hard work liaising with the College's counterpart in Barcelona to arrange a series of planned cultural development visits. North Devon College student Lewis Webster has managed a very respectable fourth place at a recent national BPEC Skill Build competition. The BPEC (British Plumbing Employers' Council) Skill Build competition, this year held at Leicester College, is an intense competition comprised of two separate contests; the competition for Young Plumber of the Year in Pipework and the competition for Young Plumber of the Year in Sheet Lead. Lewis competed in the Sheet Lead competition and did extremely well against the nations finest students.

North Devon College are entering several teams for this years Race for Life. Following the success of last year, staff recognised that many ladies from the College had entered individually, so this year decided to enter three teams with over 30 people involved to achieve the 5km walk/run for Cancer Research UK. The College has teams in both the morning and the afternoon races.

North Devon College recently hosted the BPEC Plumbing Skills 2006 South West Regional competition, which turned out to be a highly competitive and adrenaline-pumping competition. The BPEC Plumbing Skills competition has been running for over 20 years and tests the sheet lead work and copper pipe work skills of some of the best apprentices in the region. The competition offers apprentices valuable experience in working in a timely and accurate manner whilst allowing them to demonstrate their considerable talents in their own disciplines.

North Devon College Film and Media section recently held its fifth annual 'Oscar' ceremony. Film, Media & BTEC Video students enjoyed a glamorous award ceremony which saw many of them accept awards and certificates for a range of outstanding films, print designs, web designs and audio work. The ceremony was the accumulation of a year's hard work by students on a range of full time Media and Film programmes including Media (Moving Image) National Award, A Level Media Studies and A Level Film Studies. The evening gave students the opportunity to promote their skills and abilities, screening their work to an audience of family, friends and other guests.

Two teams from North Devon Colleges' Supported Learning Section took part in the 2006 Ten Tors Jubilee Challenge. The group slept under canvas on the Friday night, which for some was their first experience of camping. As indeed was the unique adventure of a visit to the Ten Tors portaloos! It was an early wake up call with Chariots of Fire playing at 5am, but after a delicious bacon sandwich the students were ready to start the challenge.
