Date: 4th March 2010

Record breaking numbers of students are applying to Petroc for courses starting in September 2010.

Devon's largest college is preparing for the biggest ever intake of teenagers at its Barnstaple and Tiverton campuses.

And the bumper crop of school leavers includes a huge rise in the number of wannabe scientists - applications for A Levels in chemistry, physics and biology are up by over 20 per cent.

"I'm delighted that so many students are choosing Petroc," said the College's Director for Curriculum and Innovation, Huw Davies.

"Applications for all of our academic and vocational courses are rising daily and we're on track for unprecedented growth in our numbers of 16 to 19-year-old students.

"The demand for places on our science courses, in particular, is staggering and reflects the excellent lecturers and facilities we have in Tiverton and Barnstaple, as well as the outstanding achievements of our current and former students."

Petroc's overall A Level pass rate in 2009 was 97.86 per cent, with 22 subjects achieving 100 per cent success rates.

Sciences performed exceptionally well, including 42 per cent of chemistry students gaining A grade results.

Success in vocational subjects is also running high with a 98 per cent pass rate and 18 out of 23 courses achieving 100 per cent success.
