Petroc student signs international record deal

Date: 21st September 2010

A 16-year-old Petroc / Academy of Music and Sound student has clinched an international recording contract.

Tom Andrews, from Exmouth, signed a multi-album deal with Ellen DeGeneres's ‘eleveneleven’ record label in America, last week.

The teenager has studied at the Academy in Exeter, which runs courses in partnership with Petroc’s Tiverton Campus, for the past year.

Now he has become an overnight sensation after his first television appearance in the USA, performing for 30 million viewers on Ellen.

Clips of his performance went global via the internet and the media has leapt on the story.

Tom applied to Petroc after completing his GCSE exams aged 15. The College and the Academy agreed to the musician joining the National Certificate in Music course a year early because lecturers were so impressed with him

Steve Ryan, The Academy’s centre manager said: “Tom’s a great lad and a really talented singer-songwriter.

“He’s worked really hard and he is an inspiration to his fellow students.”

Tom is back in the South West at the moment but is set to return to the USA in a couple of weeks, to pursue his career as a recording artist.
