STEM Conference Success

Date: 14th February 2011

The South West’s Regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Centre, Petroc, hosted the Learning, Skills, Improvements and Service (LSIS) STEM Learning Fair recently at Sandy Park Conference Centre in Exeter. The Fair aimed to encourage innovative teaching and learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines.

The event provided STEM practitioners with opportunities to update their subject specific knowledge and skills helping to bring STEM alive in the classroom through enhancement and enrichment activities.

The event attracted over 160 professionals from throughout the South West across the FE and Skills STEM learning community. Through collaboration and shared working, the LSIS Post 16 STEM Programme focuses upon sustainable activity to achieve long term impact in schools and colleges within these exciting fields.

STEM practitioners have been set the task of ensuring that they harness technology effectively within their organisations to improve the quality in teaching and learning and to provide more flexible, engaging learning opportunities for all learners, including looking at virtual learning environments.

The event had leading national companies showcasing their products, many of which had exhibited at the BETT (British Education and Training Technology) Show in London, earlier in the year. This allowed practitioners to discover the very latest technologies on the market including assistive technologies, to enhance the quality of teaching and learning being delivered regionally.

Delegates were able to visit an exhibition area, attend CPD interactive workshops and hear the very latest STEM news from a number of key note speakers including; LSIS South West Regional STEM Champion (Cerian Ayres from Petroc); Director of the LSIS Post 16 STEM Programme (Helen Roberts);  Joint Manager 16+ Teaching Programme from The Royal Academy of Engineering (Stylli Charalampous); and Dr Markus Groppe from Nuffield Laboratory of Ophthamology at John Radcliffe Hospital, who talked to delegates about the pioneering work that he had been involved with in Retina Chip research.

Attendees were impressed with the day with Matt Edworthy from the North Devon Biosphere commenting on how it was “motivational and likely to result in new partnerships”, Alex Ledbrooke from Cornwall College also commented “A useful day to network, share information and learn”. “Some excellent ICT ideas to take away” added Amanda Spanswick from New College Swindon.
