The whole group have a go
A group of 16 young people from Forches Youth Group, the youngest just 10 years old, spent the morning at Petroc’s Brannams Campus on Tuesday 22 February, where they were introduced to working with plaster.
After a brief introduction the group got stuck in and mixed up their own plaster, placed it into moulds and then made impressions of their hands. Some also added their own finishing touches and once set they will paint them up ready to display at the ‘Lighting-up the Museum’ exhibition.
The exhibition, which will take place at Barnstaple Museum on Saturday 12 March, 6-8pm, will also include the work of other young people from Barnstaple schools and has been arranged in partnership with the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. The theme is the perceptions of young people and has been inspired by Forches and their feelings of often being labelled as the ‘bad’ kids.
The opportunity to come to Petroc to try out plastering wouldn’t have been possible without Aimhigher; a nation wide programme concerned with removing barriers, raising aspirations and promoting further and higher education as an option for everyone.
They work with groups from lower-socio economic backgrounds and have developed partnerships with key community groups and agencies such as Forches Youth Club.
“What they have produced during this fun fibrous plastering session will be going towards their exhibition which makes it even more worthwhile,” said Petroc’s Architecture, Construction and the Built Environment Senior Tutor, Jason Quinn.
“We’re keen to support local community projects such as this and plastering is an ideal vehicle to help engage young people as it is so hands on.”
