An active summer ahead for young people
Petroc’s Supported Learning team are running a six week summer activity programme for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities in the local area.
Due to funding from a lottery bid which the College applied for, the subsidised cost per day is just £30 and activities will include horse riding, canoeing, climbing, swimming, craft, cooking, ICT, surfing and bowling.
“Young people with learning difficulties and disabilities are often isolated during the long holidays,” said Jennie Jones, Petroc’s Section Leader for Supported Learning.
“By offering this summer long activity programme, we hope to create an opportunity for them to get involved in fun activities, try out different skills and form new friendships.”
The activities are open to all young people aged 16 to 25 in the North Devon area. They can chose to come all week (Monday to Friday) at a reduced price of £130 or pick set days of the week at a cost of £30 per day. These would need to be fixed days for the six weeks so that activities can be arranged appropriately.
The programme has been made possible thanks to The Big Lottery Fund and Petroc is also hoping to provide transport from central pick up points at a nominal charge for those who need it.
Most of the activities will be held at Petroc’s main site in Barnstaple but some will take place at Calvert Trust, the beach and other local amenities. Transport will be arranged for these off site activities.
The summer activity programme will run Monday to Friday, from Monday 11 July until Friday 19 August 2011 from 9.30am to 3pm.
