Awe-inspiring performance from the Petroc Male Volleyball Team
After winning the quarter final of the British Colleges National Cup on the 2 March 2011 against Peter Symons College in Winchester the Petroc male volleyball team travelled to Brockenhurst for the Semi-final on the 16 March 2011.
Arriving at yet another away game after a long three and a half hours on the minibus with tired and stiff muscles, Dom Spears (captain) took charge of the team and led them through thirty minutes of intense and focused warm up. This followed by a quick team talk with Coach Ruth Lovell focusing on Petroc’s strengths as a team then they were ready for a tough game.
As Petroc won the toss they were able to pile on the pressure from the start with Matt Rhymer’s tough serves and promptly went into a 5:0 lead. Brockenhurst did rally round at a score of 10:2 to Petroc and started hitting accurately, consistently and very hard. Both coaches used tactical timeouts and from Petroc’s timeout at a score of 20:18 to Petroc, Ben Ackland showed great skill and dominance at the net; this together with great serving from Connor Stallard and Matt Rhymer secured the first set for Petroc with a 25:22 score.
The game play continued to be high from both teams in the second set, but Petroc dominated and were never less then four points ahead and with that they managed to win the second set 25:18. Once Brockenhurst were 2:0 behind they found it very hard to respond to the continuous pressure from Petroc both on and off court and lost the final set 25:16. Tim Latcham who would normally play within the starting six but was on the bench with an injury, lead the pressure from the side with huge cheers and support for his team mates.
One of Petroc’s main strengths on the day was the teamwork and the continuous support all the players showed each other, lifting everybody’s game. This was also apparent when votes for man of mach were read out on the way home on the minibus, as they were fairly evenly distributed between the players with the two setters Matt Rhymer and Jack Constable winning with equal amount of votes.
The Petroc male volleyball team is now looking forward to the final of the National Cup at Loughborough University on 6 April 2011, their opponent is still to be decided between Southport College and King Edward VI College (Stourbridge).
