Petroc offer intense plastering course at new Brannams Campus
A two week intensive basic plastering course at Petroc’s new Brannams Campus has just come to an end for 11 candidates who have greatly benefited from developing new skills during a period of unemployment.
The course was developed as part of the Response to Redundancy (R2R) project which has been running at the College for two years. During this time, Petroc has offered many courses both internally and externally including Retail Skills, IT and Administration, Chainsaw and Forklift courses, all driven by the labour market.
The project is a Skills Funding Agency (formerly the LSC) and ESF funded project, enabling Petroc to work closely with Jobcentre plus to provide support and skills development activities relevant to identified vacancies and sector based skills demand in local labour markets.
The Jobcentre offered the 11 candidates mentoring, advice and guidance in order to identify specific areas of interest. A bespoke course was then arranged with Petroc’s School of Architecture, Construction and the Built Environment to meet these needs.
The training took place at the College’s Brannams Campus in Roundswell, Barnstaple, where practical skills were developed in the new purpose built Plastering Academy.
The collaboration between Petroc and the Jobcentre has developed in direct response to industry to increase skills in the Plastering sector and has greatly benefited the candidates, who commented that they enjoyed working with other people and found the workshops well equipped. There was a very positive training atmosphere and level of professionalism throughout the two week programme and the learners found the course instructor extremely helpful and responsive to their differing abilities.
