Petroc Celebrates World Book Night

Date: 29th March 2011

Petroc recently benefitted from the generosity of Diane Trembath, one of The World Book Night ‘givers’, when she attended Petroc to present 48 copies of Half a Yellow Sun by Chimanmanda Ngozi Adichie for Petroc’s students to enjoy free of charge.

World Book Night is the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland. Supported by the Publishers Association, the Booksellers Association, the Independent Publishers Guild, the Reading Agency with libraries and the BBC, one million books will be given away by a variety of passionate readers to members of the public.

The book give-away will comprise 40,000 copies of each of the 25 carefully selected titles, to be given away by 20,000 ‘givers’, who will each distribute 48 copies of their chosen title to whomever they choose on World Book Night. The remaining books will be distributed by World Book Night itself in places that might otherwise be difficult to reach, such as prisons.

Diane chose Half a Yellow Sun as she commented;

“It is one of the most moving books I have ever read and it taught me so much about Nigeria, in which it is set, and the Biafran War and its aftermath – which was world news in the 1960s but was then largely forgotten.”

“It is superbly written and no-one was surprised when it won the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2007. It really is one of those books that changes one’s perception of the world and I wanted to pass that onto the students of Petroc.”

Virginia Havergal Learning Centres and e-Resources Manager, comments;

“I think it was wonderful that Diane Trembath chose Petroc as her recipient as students and staff were able to get copies of a book that they might not normally select to read.”

“It was very exciting to see 48 copies of Half of a Yellow Sun appear in the Learning Centre at Tiverton and we were able to share some with our Barnstaple Campus too. Students and staff were very keen to get copies and no sooner had the publicity been launched they were snapped up.”.
