Following on from their success at the Formula 1 in Schools regional finals, six students from Petroc won the Best Rookie Team of the Year Award at the National Finals held during the Big Bang Fair at the London Excel centre.
The Formula 1 in schools competition challenges teams to build a Formula 1 racing car to very exact specifications and race it down a 20m track in the fastest time possible. Students not only had to build, test and race the car, but were required to give a presentation to a team of judges and attend a series of interviews where they were quizzed on their design, engineering, business plan and sponsorship deals.
The competition is worldwide with schools and colleges competing in countries as far away as Australia.
The students, all currently in their first year of their Engineering A Level, named their team DART and had the 4th fastest race time and came 4th overall out of the 18 competing Formula 1 teams.
“This is an excellent result for the students, they are already planning improvements for next year and have plans to go all the way to represent the UK in the World Championships,” comments Petroc Lecturer, Mark Holbourn.
The team would like to thank DS&B Engineering and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Project for their support.
