Petroc's Netball Academy take part in the E-Teach.com National Schools Netball Championships

Date: 30th March 2011

Petroc Netball Academy finished a creditable 7th in the recent E-Teach.com National Schools Netball Championships at Southamptom Outdoor Sports Centre.

Petroc were one of eighteen, U19 teams playing in the tournament and were representing the South West region after qualifying in the regional rounds in January.

Petroc had a slow start all round and lost their first match against a very disciplined team from Bancroft’s School 7-17.  This was a disappointing start, however Petroc re-found their form and started working more cohesively to impressively win their next game against Baines School, 16-5.

The third game against Roedean was disappointing with players losing possession and focus ending in a 9-9 draw, despite being 4-2 up at half time. Once again the Petroc players pulled together and implemented effective unit work and tactics to win their next four games, Wrekin College 13-8, Oakham School 15-6, Woodhouse Grove School 11-4 and Royal Grammar School 18-5.

With the top 2 teams in each group qualifying for the semi-finals Petroc needed to win their last group match to take 2nd place! The game was highly contested from start to finish and despite being 5-7 down at half time Petroc rallied strongly and took the lead by 1 goal with one minute left to play with Levi O’Brien and Laura Short executing great shots under pressure.  However, the last minute saw Sharnbrook Upper School take any opportunities given to gain possession and they scored 3 goals to take the game 13-11.  The Petroc team certainly proved their capability to play at a national level and they competed consistently scoring a total of 100 goals in 8 games and conceding 67.

Petroc Netball Team: Rebecca Priest (Captain), Beth Nancekivell (Vice Captain), Lizzy Hanner, Amber Manley, Miriam Kimber, Laura Short, Rosie Norton, Levi O’Brien, Charlotte Moore and Steph Batstone.

Netball Academy member and DO! Volunteer Jess Berry also attended to be an official tournament scorer.
