There was a real buzz of excitement at Petroc’s Hair Academy this week as the fifth Annual Hairdressing Competition took place and resulted in some spectacular hairdressing styles and techniques from the College’s full and part time students.
The learners competed in one of nine diverse categories including Evening/Bridal; Seasons; Cultures and Nursery Rhymes. The overall winner of each category was awarded with a trophy and a great prize thanks to competition sponsors Aston & Fincher and Schwarzkopf.
Winner of the Year 1, National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 Themed Total Look ‘Culture’ category, 18 year old Karla O’Brien, was inspired by India for her colourful entry.
“I love the way Indian women look at their wedding,” she said. “Their hair is usually either very straight and sleek or loosely put up but I developed my own ideas to fit the theme.”
“I’m really chuffed that I‘ve won as it was a complete surprise!”
The students and their models, who were mainly friends or family members who had kindly given up their time, were judged by representatives from the Petroc Management Team and Governors and representatives from local Hair and Beauty Salons Colorseum, Kudos, Golds, Passion, 1550, Collin Danks and Reflections.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to cast off the bonds of commercial work and completely express themselves without having to think about the client,” said Derek Jenkins, Petroc’s Head of the School of Lifestyle.
“It gets them to focus on a high level of skill which is needed in the industry.”
In the last competition of the day, the second year NVQ Level 3 students went head to head in the Total Themed Look category, which this year was inspired by nursery rhymes. There were some truly exception work, inspired by nursery rhymes such as ‘Mary Mary Quite Contrary’, ‘Incy Wincy Spider’, Hey Diddle Diddle’ and ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat’.
“I really like the avant-garde style,” said winner Laura Meaker, aged 19. “I work better under pressure so I had planned the concept but not the hair – that was quite spur of the moment. I didn’t think I’d win as a there’s been a lot of effort from everyone.”
The judges had a difficult job in deciding the winners as all the students had worked hard to produce innovation and inspiring creations in all of the categories.
