Students draw artistic inspiration from local beauty

Date: 19th April 2011

Students were inspired by the beauty of the local landscape during the new ECOMind Art on Prescription programme, which uses art to raise self esteem and create a calming atmosphere in which to develop new skills.

The programme follows in the footsteps of Petroc’s successful Art on Prescription which was proven to lower stress and anxiety and has helped many people.

Both programmes support individuals aged 16 and over who are experiencing mild to moderate depression and/or anxiety. The overall aim is to help make life that bit easier by introducing creativity, opportunities for friendship and a professional package of support in a confidential environment.

The recently introduced ECOMind Art on Prescription programme continues to offer students professional support, but with the additional element of drawing inspiration from the local environment; from its seascapes and landscapes to its towns and villages.

Inspired by the coastline at Wilder’s Mouth and Capstone Hill, students took part in a series of outdoor sketchbook workshops. Through these sessions they gained confidence and skills in creating wonderful artwork using pen, paint and photography.

The final designs were then reproduced onto large boards and were displayed as an open art exhibition beside the Landmark Theatre and park on Wilder Road in Ilfracombe.

The artwork was enjoyed by many who passed by and it is hoped that the exhibition has had a positive impact on the town as it demonstrates local talent inspired by local natural beauty.

The College would like to thank TRANSFORM, The Sign Shop, Blue Soup, Ilfracombe Town Council and CMS Ltd who have all helped in the success of the programme.

The next ECOArt on Prescription programme starts in Bideford at the Burton Art Gallery on Thursday 28 April, 12.30pm.
