May has been Cancer Awareness month at Petroc and the College has run various sessions and presentations to help make students aware of how the disease can affect their particular age group.

Simon Hewett-Avison, the Education and Advocacy Manager South West and South Wales for Teenage Cancer Trust, delivered a number of tutorials to students at Petroc’s, Braunton Road, Brannams and Tiverton Campuses.

One student who attended a presentation commented; “I thought it was really good to find out facts about teenagers having cancer, how it is diagnosed and treated.”

The College also invited a Health Improvement Specialist to show both staff and students the damage caused to the skin by sun using a facial scanner. Many were shocked by what they saw and it helped promote the necessity of using sun cream.

The Cancer Awareness month was initially sparked by the recent loss of staff member, Margaret Young, to cancer. In memory of Margaret, colleagues worked hard to raise money for the Cancer Trust through holding a dinner party and a raffle. They raised a total of £400 and presented Simon Hewett-Avison with the cheque last week.

As a result of the various events that have taken place, many students are now keen to get involved in fundraising events to help raise awareness of cancer in teenagers.
