Successful Season for Petroc's Volleyball players, Swimmers and Athletes at the 33rd BSC National Championships

Date: 19th April 2011

A successful 2010/2011 sporting season for Petroc’s 19 Male and Female Volleyball Players, 4 individual cross country runners and  3 swimmers reached its peak as the College’s athletes, sponsored  by Subway congregated at Bath University to represent the South West Region at the 33rd BCS National Championship. The 26  athletes sent is the highest number of athletes from Petroc or North Devon College sent to any competition for a long time.

Girls Volleyball

The competition for the Volleyball players began on Friday with a  round robin competition for the girls and a 3 pool competition  for the boys. Both the girls and boys from Petroc were victorious  in their opening games on Friday afternoon which filled them with confidence and enthusiasm for the demanding competition schedule ahead of them across the weekend.

The girl’s team, an inexperienced team with 6 first years and only 1 second year player lost their second game to Stoke  followed by 2 successive losses to the North West Region and Scotland. A break from the sports hall as a team allowed them to refocus and they won their game v the East Midlands Region convincingly. After their second win the girls really picked up and even though they faced the toughest two teams for their final games they played exceptionally well and demonstrated that they have gained a huge amount of experience over the weekend. They finished the weekend in overall 6th position and are really looking forward to improving on that next year as a more experienced team.

Girls Volleyball Team:

  • Ellen Raymond (captain)
  • Immy Dawes (vice captain)
  • Lauren Yeo (Player of the tournament)
  • Emma-Jane Evans
  • Phoebe Reed
  • Charlotte Hole
  • Claudia Baddick

Boys Volleyball

The boy’s team on the other hand brought a huge amount of experience to the competition with many of the boys having represented the South West last year at the National Championship at Loughborough University. They won their first pool of three teams easily and also won their second pool of three teams to qualify for the semi final against Wales.

The semi final started badly for Petroc going 10:2 down very early on. An attempt to steady the ship allowed them to play better in the second half of the first set but it was too little too late and Wales took an early 1:0 advantage. The Petroc boys played much more relaxed in the second set and won it convincingly evening the score to 1:1. In the third and final set Petroc was in the lead but the nerves got the better of the boys and Wales won the set narrowly 16:14, qualifying them for the final and Petroc once again for the third and fourth play off.

Petroc now faced the only team they lost to in the group stages, but after losing the first set they rallied round and won crucial points to win the second and third set convincingly and like the previous year, won the bronze medal.

The cross country running and swimming competitions both took part on Saturday. Cross Country was a 1km lap around the picturesque campus of Bath University which the girls had to complete 4.5 times and the boys 7.5 times. The 90 girls set off first, Scarlett Olicer who represented Petroc was nervous but run confidently and finished in 58th position. then the 90 boys lined up and the started the race, Petroc was represented by Jack Hutchens who finished in a very respectable 11th position, Rob Overney who finished in 33rd position and Sean Deasy who finished in 49th position.

The swimming competition was held in the 50m pool at Bath University, it started shortly after the cross country running races. As every year Petroc was represented by some very strong swimmers, Eva Murphy who swam in the 50m Butterfly and the relay finished in 5th position; Emily Hutchens swam in the 50m and 100m Breast Stroke as well as the relay and finished in 4th position, and for the boys Freddie Hedger swam in the 100m Butterfly and the relay and finished in 4th position.

All the hard training from all the South West athletes including the Petroc students really paid off this year, with the South West finishing second overall in the Wilkinson Sword competition. Petroc male volleyball team’s next medal opportunity is on the 4th May at Kettering in the National Cup Final against King Edwards (Stourbridge), a team they beat at the National Championships but cannot underestimate the power of revenge.
