Tiverton's got talent

Date: 26th May 2011

Petroc celebrated the talents of budding authors from Tiverton High School this week.

The winners of a creative writing competition organised as part of the growing partnership between the school and college will see their work published in a new magazine: ‘Petroc Creative’.

First prize went to Kelby Browning (Year 11), with Shona Lazarus (Year 10) and Lucy Saunders (Year 11) in second and third place. As well as seeing their work in print, they won prizes of £30, £20 and £10 of gift vouchers, respectively.

The girls were presented with their prizes and certificates recognising their achievement by the Head of Petroc’s Tiverton Campus Sixth Form, Donna Townsend and English lecturer, Ben Watkins.

“I’m very impressed by the imagination shown in the entries,” said Ben.

“Students were given some possible titles and topics as starting points but the aim was to inspire and support, rather than to limit and constrict.

“As such, a variety of different areas were approached with real imagination and sensitivity.

“There’s clearly a great deal of creativity in the area – it just needs the opportunity to be celebrated.”

Petroc already runs a number of successful evening classes in creative writing, alongside A Level courses.

The competition was championed by Petroc’s Sixth Form team and teachers at Tiverton High School – notably Juliet Main.

Future events will expand and promote opportunities for people of all ages throughout the area, with the Petroc Creative magazine providing a showcase for the best in local writing.

Ben added: “This competition is just the first to be held in the area – so budding authors should keep their eyes peeled at the Tiverton Campus and on the college website. Keep writing!”
