Jerwood Painting Fellowship exhibition at Petroc
A prestigious touring exhibition of new works by the inaugural Jerwood Painting Fellows: Clare Mitten, Cara Nahaul and Corinna Till, is now on display at Petroc’s Goodwin Gallery, in association with the Burton Art Gallery & Museum.
The Jerwood Painting Fellowships is a new open submission initiative, designed to promote and support emerging artists in the field of painting.
Corinna Till has been working on two sets of gate paintings; the activation of the paintings hinges upon how they are inserted and held back in contact with the world. Clare Mitten presents a collection of painterly objects and 2D collaged counterparts, and Cara Nahaul has transformed her previous paintings using different mediums and selecting ever more intimate and unusual images.
“The artists studied at the Slade (Corinna Tull), Goldsmiths (Cara Nahaul) and the Royal College of Art (Clare Mitten) and winning a Jerwood Painting Fellowships is one of the best compliments that an emerging artist can receive,” said Pete Newell, programme manager at Petroc.
“For students at Petroc it is incredibly inspiring to see what some of the best of the UK’s young artists are producing and how a career in the arts might develop.”
Miranda Clarke, visual arts manager at the Burton said: “We’re committed to driving the quality of exhibitions and displays in the North Devon region, introducing new audiences to contemporary artworks and encouraging discussion and debate on the arts.
“To have the Jerwood Painting Fellowships showing at Petroc in the new Goodwin Gallery, as a satellite venue and part of the Burton's programme is a dynamic step for the Burton, deepening our relationship with Petroc greatly.”
