Petroc’s celebrates world class graduates of 2011

Date: 17th October 2011

More than 100 Petroc degree students graduated at a ceremony in Barnstaple on Saturday October 15.

For the sixth year running, blue skies and sunny weather smiled on the successful learners, as they made their way from The Square, along Barnstaple High Street, to the parish church of St Peters & Mary Magdalene.

And Petroc’s Principal, David Dodd, chose the event to highlight the extraordinary results achieved by students who study Higher Education at the college, in partnership with Plymouth University.

“The graduands we celebrate today are amongst the best students at one of the best universities in the world,” he told the audience.

“These students are amongst the most intelligent, capable and driven people to be found; not only in North Devon, not only in England, but in the world,” he said.

Many of Petroc’s Foundation Degree students progress to a further year of study in Plymouth, where they achieve higher results than learners who have spent their first two years at university.

Last year, 20 per cent gained first class honours degrees and 60 per cent either first or upper seconds.

David praised the students and the contributions the college’s lecturing and support staff make to their success.

And he said that Petroc’s Higher Education programmes are a high quality option, rather than just a cheaper alternative to going away to university.

“Sometimes we think we have to travel further or spend more to get world class quality,” he added.

“We don’t. The people and resources are here on our doorstep.”

The college has just published its new Guide to Higher Education Courses 2012/13, featuring 25 courses which can all be studied on a full or part time basis.
