Petroc student wins geographical study trip of a lifetime

Date: 19th December 2011

A Petroc student is going around the world after winning up to £4,000 of support from the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) Learning and Leading Gap Year Programme.

Emma Crewdson, 17, from Appledore was selected to become one of only 14 students across the UK to be given a grant to undertake a geographical themed gap year anywhere on the planet.

She will spend time visiting Germany and Australia, studying coastal geo-engineering projects and obtaining work experience with various local companies.

On her return Emma will act as a Geography Ambassador, giving presentations to students on her experiences and introducing younger school pupils to the benefits of studying geography.

“I hope my experience will show others why learning about the world’s geography is so relevant and why geography is such a great subject to study,” said Emma.

This is the second time one of the College’s students has won one of these coveted grants in three years.

Petroc Barnstaple geography lecturer, Peter Christie said: “I think Emma is ideally suited to undertake such a year, as she is a well-focused and mature student with definite ideas as to a future career.”

Congratulating Emma on winning their award, RGS head of education Steve Brace said: “A key aspect of geography is being able to see and investigate the world first hand.

“The Society is delighted to be supporting Emma in this way, so that she can realise her ambition to travel overseas and gain first-hand experience of the world’s people, places and environments.”
