Supersonic experience for Devon schools at Petroc

Date: 15th December 2011

Hundreds of pupils from primary and secondary schools all over Devon enjoyed thrilling, exciting, inspiring experiences at Petroc, recently.

The College's STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) Bloodhound Conference was a three-day event, that was also open to students, teachers, businesses and the public.

Around 650 children from North and Mid Devon, Exeter and other parts of the county visited the Barnstaple Campus to enjoy a range of fantastic learning opportunities.

Among the highlights was getting up close to a life-size model of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, which aims to rocket into the record books by breaking the 1,000mph barrier in 2013.

Bloodhound project leader and former record holder, Richard Noble OBE was there with his team, working alongside LSIS Post 16 STEM Adviser, Petroc's Cerian Ayres, to ensure the conference was a huge success.

Petroc is South West regional lead for STEM subjects and events like this are aimed at inspiring learning and encouraging progression, as well as providing invaluable continuing professional development for teachers and lecturers.

HE STEM and the College are also working on addressing the needs of local businesses - particularly with regard to higher level engineering skills.

Cerian said: "Petroc works closely with many local employers to ensure that, as an organisation, we are responsive to their training requirements.

"We're committed, as a college, to driving forward aspirations, supporting workforce development and contributing to the sustainability of the economy in Devon and the wider region."

Key partners in Petroc's STEM Bloodhound Conference included:

  • LSIS (Learning and Skills Improvement Service) Post 16 STEM Programme
  • The Royal Academy of Engineering (RA Eng)
  • National Centre for Excellence of Teaching Mathematics (NCETM)
  • National Science Learning Centre (NSLC)
  • Higher Education (HE) STEM
