Petroc goes to Parliament

Date: 19th December 2011

Students from North Devon spoke to MPs about the benefits of National Citizen Service (NCS) on a visit to London, recently (November 28, 2011).

NCS is a flagship Government programme for 16-year-olds that includes fun, challenging outdoor activities and gives young people an opportunity to give something back to their communities.

Petroc students, Jess Cox, Izzy Comerford and Dom Parkin, along with Patrick Kelly from West Buckland School, were welcomed to Parliament’s Grand Committee Room for the event, chaired by MPs Nick Hurd (Minister for Civil Society) and Tim Loughton (Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children).

And they spoke with a number of MPs from all over England, including former Education Secretary, David Blunkett.

The students were accompanied by My NCS project leader Mike Phillips and Petroc’s Head of Marketing and Communications, David Shuttleworth.

“It was great to fly the flag for the South West at the event,” said David.

“Speaking in front of an audience in the Houses of Parliament would completely faze many teenagers but it’s testimony to the success of My NCS that our team was brilliant.”

Petroc leads My NCS in the South West, working with eight partner colleges in Devon, Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

In summer 2012, over 600 students from the region will take part in the voluntary programme which includes away-from-home residential experiences and a self-designed social action project.
