From Africa to Petroc Tiverton
A student from Petroc in Tiverton has been recognised for her outstanding progression on a carpentry course, following an inspiring trip to Africa.
Jamie Barrett, studied the Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery after working as a volunteer in Kenya.
And she was awarded the ‘Best Distance Travelled Full Time Student Award’ at the College’s School of Architecture, Construction and the Built Environment prize-giving event, last month (December 8, 2011).
Jamie spent 10 weeks working for Platform 2 on community projects for vulnerable adults and children.
The sustainable lifestyle of the people she met in Africa impressed Jamie so much that, one day, she hopes to build her own sustainable home.
She was inspired to gain more skills to enable her to work on further building projects in the future, so she enrolled on the course at Petroc on her return from Africa.
Dan Pooley, Jamie’s tutor, said: “We were really impressed with Jamie’s reasons for completing the course.
“She worked very hard to achieve it and overcame many difficulties.
“She deserves this award for her inspiring goal and achievement.”
Jamie has now progressed onto the Level 2 Diploma in Bench Joinery, which she hopes to successfully complete in July. She is continuing to excel in her studies.
The glittering awards ceremony was held at the Tiverton Campus, with hospitality provided by Petroc’s catering students.
The annual event forms part of the College’s heritage by recognising excellence, achievement and hard work. It also provides a great opportunity for parents and employers to join together and celebrate individual success.
