A is for awards at Petroc Tiverton

Date: 6th January 2012

Successful students from Petroc’s Class of 2011 returned to College for an emotional and inspiring awards ceremony, last week.

The event, held in the Tiverton Campus’s Exe Restaurant, saw winners from all over Devon pick up prizes for outstanding A Level results, personal and academic achievements.

Friends who have gone on to university or employment were reunited with each other, as well as their College lecturers who gave glowing citations and presented the awards.

Deputy Principal and Head of College, Pené Prior, welcomed students, parents, lecturers and VIPs to the event – the first of its kind at Petroc in Tiverton.

And Head of Tiverton Campus Sixth Form, Donna Townsend congratulated everyone involved in the success of the award winners.

Laura Hooper picked up a hat-trick of prizes and said she was “pleased and grateful” to be recognised for her hard work.

She won the English Language and Literature Award, the Overall Academic Achievement Award and was also a Biology Olympiad winner.

“I couldn’t have achieved the results without the help and dedication of lecturers,” she said.

Laura was one of many former Tiverton High School pupils among the winners and Headteacher Andrew Lovett was at the event to congratulate them.

He said he was incredibly proud of the students and stressed the importance of the strong relationship between the school and college together with their shared values.

As well as recognising academic excellence, the ceremony also celebrated students’ sheer determination and hard work.

Exceptional Merit Award winners Alice Rabjohns, Cobi Lawrence and Thomas Hooper were recognised for their outstanding performance during difficult times.

Alice, who retook her AS Levels following personal tragedy, said: “The best thing about studying at Petroc was the continued support from staff.”

She added: “It’s been great to talk to people I haven’t seen for a while and hear how they are getting on.”

Former Uffculme School student, Michael Wilson, picked up the prize for Communications and Culture. He hopes to study politics at a top university in Scotland or London.

“The good thing about Petroc is that it’s a really open learning environment and all the staff are here to help you succeed,” said Michael, who was president of the campus’s Student Union, alongside his studies.

“There’s such a great sense of community at the college and coming here has been one of the best points of my life.”

Among the VIP guests were Cllr Neal Davey, Mayor of Tiverton, and Peter Thorn from EDF. The energy company generously sponsored the awards and provided many of the prizes, including 10 pairs of tickets for the London Eye.
