Petroc students join in Scott Centenary Celebrations

Date: 10th January 2012

Students from Petroc in Tiverton have battled against the elements to complete an 11-mile sledge pull, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott and his colleagues’ ill-fated expedition to the South Pole.

The event, part of the official Scott Centenary Celebrations in December 2011, was designed to develop and practice team-working and project management skills.

A group of 16 Public Services students from the College chose to complete an 11-mile journey, as this represents the distance in nautical miles that Scott and his team were from their supplies depot when they tragically died, frozen and starving in their tents.

The team worked in pairs for the challenge, completing relays of the 1.5-mile Army fitness test route in Tiverton, despite heavy rain and hail.

Each team member pulled the sledge to the halfway stage, before handing over to their partner to complete the second half. The final pair crossed the finish line in a time of one hour, 28 minutes and 25 seconds.

Andrew Henretty, the Public Services Programme Leader, said: “They all trained hard to complete the 11 miles in a very respectable time, especially in such difficult weather conditions.

“They can all be very proud of what they achieved.”
