High achiever Matthew Huxtable being presented his award by Nick Harvey MP
SUCCESSFUL students from Petroc’s Class of 2011 returned to Barnstaple for an emotional and inspiring awards ceremony, last week.
The event, held at the Park Hotel, saw winners from all over the area pick up prizes for outstanding A Level results, personal and academic achievements.
Friends who have gone on to university or employment were reunited with each other, as well as their College lecturers who provided glowing citations for each student.
Chairman of the Governors, Andrew Pierce, welcomed students, parents, lecturers and VIPs to the event – the first of its kind at Petroc in Barnstaple.
And Head of Humanities and Science, Keith Devine, congratulated everyone involved in the success of the award winners.
Matthew Huxtable, who picked up both the Physics Award and the Overall Academic Achievement Award, attended the event with his proud parents. He said: “I’m really pleased to receive this award, but I couldn’t have done it without the exceptional support from all the people at Petroc”.
Also at the ceremony was Aydan Greatrick, receiving the English Language and Literature Award. For Aydan, the evening was a double celebration, as only the day before he found out he has gained a place at Cambridge University.
He said: “Petroc was a great experience for me, as I got to meet all the wonderful people who are here tonight.”
For the former students, the evening was an opportunity to receive personal praise from their tutors. Megan Downing, the Psychology Award winner, said: “It’s been nice to hear what lecturers said about us all, as you don’t always get to see them on results day.”
Nick Harvey MP, guest speaker, praised the students for their fantastic results: “Tonight is a shining example of what Petroc can achieve”.
The final vote of thanks came from former Student Union President Jemma Collins. She concluded the evening by saying: “These students are some of the most genuine and intelligent people I’ve met. They are the heart of these awards”.
If you would like to find out more about studying A Levels at Petroc in Barnstaple, tutors and lecturers will be at an open event on Wednesday January 18, 2012, or you can call the College’s Guidance Centre on 01271 338125.
