Petroc's netball star chosen for national squad

Date: 17th January 2012

Petroc’s Rebecca Priest has been selected to play for the British Colleges National Netball Squad and will compete all over the UK in 2012.

Following trials at the end of last year, the young sportswoman was chosen as Vice-Captain of the British Colleges team, which is made up of the finest athletes from the UK’s sixth form colleges. This will be the second time she has played with them; the first being in 2010.

Rebecca, captain of Petroc’s Netball Academy 1st Team, plays the game four or five times a week and also regularly goes to the gym. She said: “I have always enjoyed sport and I am very competitive.”

She was coached by her mother at school, who instilled a love for the game in her. Since moving to Petroc she has enjoyed great success with the Netball Academy.

As part of the squad, Rebecca will travel to Scotland and Northern Ireland to compete and train with the very best at her level, including university teams and U19 national sides. She looks forward to being coached by England players and meeting other like-minded people who understand the training involved to get to such a high standard.

The College’s netball coach Angela Brewer said: “These trips help students develop personal and social skills, as well as improve their sporting ability.

“Rebecca’s time management is very impressive. The way she balances the work for all her A Levels with her netball shows real passion for the sport.”

Petroc’s Principal, David Dodd met with Rebecca ahead of her first fixture in Scotland, to congratulate her on her success and wish her all the best for the season.
