An action-packed skateboarding session was enjoyed by supported learning students, as part of the enrichment programme within their course.
All supported learning students at Petroc are offered the chance to take part in ‘Friday Activities’, which include trampolining, baking and outdoor adventure.
The event took place at Appledore Skate Park and was made possible by Beats Workin skateboard shop in Barnstaple, who provided all the skateboards and safety equipment for the session.
At the start of term, the outdoor adventure group expressed an interest in skateboarding and said they would like to try it during one of the Friday sessions.
Skateboarding has a number of benefits for students, as explained by activity leader Alex Bird: “It is great as it is an individual, alternative, creative and non-competitive form of exercise. It is relatively cheap for equipment and can be done virtually anywhere.
“Skateboarders are a supportive community and encourage each other to progress their skills. It doesn’t matter what level you are at as the fun is in the learning”, he added.
The afternoon gave students the chance to experience what is considered an extreme sport in a safe environment. James Walding was particularly enthusiastic and attempted a number of technical manoeuvres.
James said: “My brother skateboards but I didn’t think I would be able to do it. Now I have tried it I will definitely be getting a skateboard.”
The activity was enjoyed by all who took part and some of the students are now considering taking up the sport as a hobby, following the taster session.
The outdoor adventure group can look forward to many more outings this year, as Alex is currently planning to take the students climbing, mountain biking, caving and surfing in the near future.
