Foundation Degree student wins local photography competition

Date: 31st January 2012

A second year Foundation Degree Fine Art student at Petroc has been recognised for her artistic eye in The North Devon Heritage Photographic Competition.

Gianna Guarino entered the ‘Characters’ category with a photograph she had taken as part of a fine art project about ageing, called ‘Mother’s Love’, and won.

The competition, which was open to all and received over 500 entries, is an annual event. It is designed to encourage awareness and appreciation for the region’s character and scenery.

The winning photograph depicts the strong relationship between a mother and her daughter. The focus is on the eyes which, Gianna says, “are ageless and still show so much expression.”

Gianna has enjoyed photography for all of her adult life. She says: “I like working with people to capture emotion in a photograph. I would describe my style as ‘candid’.”

Currently, Gianna is working to build her photography business in North Devon. She already offers a portrait service, as well as wedding photography, but is looking to branch out into other areas and is in the process of creating a website (www.giannatg.co.uk).

Gianna still has over two years left of her part time Foundation Degree and says she is learning new skills all the time: “It’s about the process. The challenges of the course evoke emotion as well as an eagerness to learn more.”
