The team are now preparing for the U19 National Schools Championships
Petroc Netball Academy has won the U19 Regional Schools Tournament.
The tournament, which took place on January 28 in Bournemouth, involved the top two U19 school or college teams from each of the seven counties in the South West. Petroc were representing Devon as County Champions.
As winners, the team have now qualified for the U19 National Schools Championships which are being held on Saturday March 17, 2012.
In the group stages of the tournament, Petroc started with a very impressive win against Warminster School (16:3). This was followed by a match against Millfield School in which Millfield got off to the better start and were 4:1 up at half time. Petroc tightened up their defence in the second half and despite losing (5:8), creative play between the attacking unit saw Petroc draw the second half.
Two more group matches followed and, despite both being close encounters, Petroc employed effective match tactics and won against Truro School (9:8) and the Royal High School Bath (13:9).
A match against Bryanston School saw Petroc tested to keep their discipline and control ending in a disappointing draw (9:9).
Petroc needed to win their last group match to qualify for the semi-finals and they achieved this against The Cheltenham Ladies College (9:6)
Petroc qualified for the semi-finals as runners-up in their group and faced Truro College (the winners of the other group). Petroc started well and some exceptional inter-change between Rebecca Priest and Laura Short, together with confident shooting, saw the team take a 6:5 halftime lead.
The team carried on with an assertive and creative attacking approach in the second half and, with both teams scoring goal for goal, Petroc took the match winning 12:11. This win ensured a place in the final and qualification for the National Championships.
In the final, Petroc continued their strong play and beat King Edwards School (12:11) to become the U19 Regional Schools Champions.
Player of the Tournament was Rebecca Priest.
DO! Volunteer and Netball Academy member Zoe Chan also attended the tournament to take on an officiating role as a tournament scorer.
The Netball Academy is sponsored by Subway.
