Sky News scholarship won by former Petroc student

Date: 2nd February 2012

A former Petroc student has won the prestigious Sky Bob Friend Memorial Scholarship, one of the most valuable journalism awards for an undergraduate.

Jemma Collins, who is studying Journalism at Kent’s Centre for Journalism, went through a grueling process to secure the award, which reimburses the winner’s first year tuition fee and provides a month-long, funded work placement at Sky News.

To win the scholarship, Jemma had to submit a detailed proposal for a multi-platform treatment of a topical news item, appropriate to Sky News and then the shortlisted candidates had to undergo a spelling, grammar and current affairs test and a 40 minute interview.

Jemma described the experience as “really intense.” After submitting her proposal on Friday January 27, Jemma then only had a few days to relax before being called back for the test and interview. She said: “It was a stressful time. I haven’t really had time to take it all in yet, I’m just relieved it’s over!”

The aspiring journalist is clearly delighted to have won, though. Speaking shortly after finding out, she said: “I'm so over the moon I don't think I can contain myself. I think I'm going to burst!”

During her work experience at Sky News, Jemma will be able to experience all aspects of news coverage, from broadcasting to writing. The work experience will prove invaluable when Jemma comes to apply for jobs after graduating.

While at Petroc, Jemma chose to study an additional HE module alongside her A Level programme. The Practical Writing for FE Students covers all aspects of writing, including journalism and advertising. Jemma said the course gave her “a good grounding” for her journalism course.

Jemma was presented with her award at Alex Crawford's Bob Friend Memorial Lecture.
