Petroc thanks camera donors
A few weeks ago the North Devon Journal published an article about the new photographic darkroom opening at Petroc, Barnstaple. The article went on to ask for any old film cameras that people of the area would like to donate to the College for students to use in conjunction with the brand new facilities.
The appeal has been an outstanding success and the College has received over 80 cameras in an amazing response from members of the public. There have also been donations of other useful equipment, such as tripods, filters, and even an 8mm film projector.
Photography lecturer Richard Crossman said: “We would like to say a big thank you to all the people of North Devon and beyond who have been so generous in their donations.
“Most of the cameras will either go on to be used regularly by students, or will be used to teach learners about the history of cameras… some of the cameras donated are nearly 100 years old!,” said Richard.
“What has really struck me is the moving stories that people have to tell about the bits of photographic equipment and the people they belonged to.
“Many of the cameras have been donated by people whose loved ones have passed away leaving boxes of well-loved and well-used cameras and accessories.
“It is amazing to think that a new generation of budding photographers will now benefit from all the items that have been donated, and I hope we have helped to free up some much needed cupboard, attic and garage space in the process!,” he added.
If there are still people wishing to donate photographic equipment they can email donate.cameras@petroc.ac.uk. The College is particularly interested in hearing from people with 35mm or medium format SLR cameras, but will consider anything offered.
